Getting Back to the Canvas & Brush

When I was a child, I was really into art. That never really changed. I always had glue, scissors, tape, makers, a ruler and paints around. I loved letting my creativity shine.

During school I excelled in my art classes. In high school, I had an amazing art teacher who inspired me to full out pursue my passion and talent in a big way. From there I was accepted into one of the number one art colleges in the nation!

The first year at Ringling College of Art & Design {no matter your major} is a foundation year. You take the most amazing art classes that define your passion, interests and fine-tune your skills. I drew, colored, penciled, ink, welded, soldered, char-coaled, printed and painted my way from project to project. It was fantastic and HARD. Design school simply put- hardest four years of my life.

After my first year, the next 3 years was focused on my major- interior design. I loved it… everything about it was meant for me. I excelled in my classes and graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. From there, you know the story- I interned and landed some amazing opportunities. I worked those out for a few years, gained the experience and business fundamentals I needed and then A Design Story was born.

In the midst of blogging, designing locally and virtually, being a wife and full time member of my family, I seem to have less and less time to explore my creativity apart from interior design. This summer I decided to make time for the things I like to do… I have spent more time at the beach, more time reading and more time trying new recipes. The other thing I really want to get back into: painting.

There is nothing like brushing fresh paint onto white canvas. I had tons of acrylic paints and brushes, but recently good ol’ Michael’s Craft store was having a fun summer sale. I went out and grabbed some canvas and some more paints. I can’t wait to get started and get my painting creativity flowing again…

Here are a few pieces that made my heart flutter and inspired me to start painting again…

I can’t wait to see what you create. I am no artist… I wish I could be! Maybe you can give some tips when you showcase your work??

Wish that I was more creative, I can usually recreate something similar, but I can’t come up with creative things on my own!

      Hi Deidre,
Do you like to paint? I love it! I think it is totally ok to get inspired by someone else’s work and try your hand at it for fun! I am going to give out some fun tips when I showcase a few of my paintings… stay tuned!

I’m so excited to see your work! I really love photography and I’d like to get back into taking beautiful pictures, and not just for the blog.

    • Lindsay says:

      Hi Katie!!
Thanks for the sweet words. I love photography too… I took in in highschool and college. I have been pretty good at taking fun photos because it less time consuming for me… painting takes some time so it has become less of a priority… getting back to it will be great! What do you like to take photos of?

YES! My textile artwork! I just graduated from VCU in Dec with my BFA in Craft and Material studies, focusing in textiles. However, since graduating I’ve been working on starting and building a home staging and interior decorating biz. Gotta find a way (and the time) to get more of my artwork back into my routine.

Thanks for the reminder to do that! ;)

Can’t wait to see your paintings and if you’re ever back in the RVA area let’s get together! :)
