I have gotten several emails since my post on our new comforter last week. Some asking the exactly style, brand and digits of our new set, while others asking how to pick the style of a new comforter set!
I figured it would be nice if I shared some {interior} designer tips on the subject since it popped up! {Plus, the subject is kind of important since we spend almost one third of our lives in bed}.
If you are shopping for a new bed comforter keep in mind that the comforter can be the main focal point in your room. But they are also considered functional as they make for a very comfortable and cozy bed to sleep in too! Choosing the right comforter for your bed takes a little bit of thought and preparation.
I jotted down a bunch of great tips on how to choose the right comforter for you…
Who, What, & Where. First things first, knowing what you need will help in choosing the perfect comforter set. Are you looking for a guest room, a master bedroom or even a child’s room? How durable does it need to be {this will determine the material and even the right color}.
Size Matters. The first factor is choosing the right size to make sure that it actually fits your bed. Because o1f new designs & types, not all mattresses are the same size. If you have a standard size mattress, it will most likely fit into one of the conventional categories like Full, Queen, or King. Remember if you have a pillow top; go up a size {if you can}.
Quality Counts. When shopping for a comforter look at the threads per inch. This figure should give you a good idea of the degree of quality. Normally thread counts above a 250 offer a velvety and cozy feel and fabric that will last a long time. If at all possible avoid thread counts below 200, you won’t regret it! Choose something durable because chances are it will take a beating over time.
Flip & Flop. It’s also a great idea to look for a comforter that has patterns on both sides. That way you can easily change the look of your room, simply by flipping over the comforter, and having a bedroom with a brand new look.
Get Creative. Consider the overall look and style of the room. It’s your space, so consider the appeal you are shooting for and achieve it by selecting a comforter that makes you feel the way you want to feel in your haven. For example, if a particular color or texture makes you feel luxurious or happy, choose it!
Put One Foot in Front of the Other. The style of the room will be improved or held back depending on the type of bedding you select for the space. This is why many people choose their bedding before they paint their bedroom or change the look of the space. Bedding is the foundation is most cases.
What’s Inside Counts. If you are in the market for a down comforter, the most expensive kinds will have pure white down in them, but actually a mixture of down and feathers will do the job nicely and is not as expensive.
Moving & Grooving. Finally, be sure that this style is stitched so that the insulation material cannot move about very freely or shift. If the stitching is not in place the filler can shift so that some parts do not even offer much insulation at all. This is widely known, and most styles will have necessary stitching in place on the quilt, but just make sure before you buy.
Picking Patterns. Should you decide to select bedding with ‘big’ pattern, go solid on some of the other details in the room {like curtains, rugs and accessories}. It will make the bed the focal point and keeping the other details more muted, will create a cohesive and pulled together look. {Most of the time, too busy is bad}!
Just take the reverse idea if you decide to go solid and more simplistic with your bedding. Punch up the room with bold colors, patterns in the way of rugs, curtains and accessories.
Still not enough information on patterns? We wrote an article for AOL’s ShelterPop awhile ago on Patterned Bedding and Making it Work!
Buying good quality is an investment in practicality and appearance at the same time. Use these guidelines and you should be happy with it for years to come. A perfect bedroom is practical, comfortable and stylish. Furnished with individual style, a bedroom can be a cozy place to rest, relax or even work. Choose classic furniture, large plush rugs and unique accessories that reflect you and your style!

Awesome post!! So much “comforter eye candy”! 🙂 I’m redoing my master and just bought a comforter on clearance at Target. It’s solid gray and not a print, but I’m adding fun accessories and pillows and redid my headboard here: http://tinyurl.com/48g8hg3 Now I’m trying to figure out what do with above my headboard…. Love what you did with yours! 🙂
take care!

I love the Crisp & White comforter!!! I saw it in the catalog and wanted it but with my animals jumping on my bed I didn’t think it would last long. It looks so feminine and delicate I love it. I just might have to train them to stay off the bed because the more I see it the more I want it. 🙂 I saw one similar at bed bath and beyond by Donna Karen ( I think) but this one has the pretty bows that I think sells me.
