Keep the Fire Burning… Romantic Bedroom Ideas
Valentine’s Day is the holiday that inspires us to make heartfelt gifts and create loving atmospheres. In the spirit of the holiday, I thought I would give you some tips on how to create a space that feels romantic all year long!
So many romantic bedroom design schemes are often too feminine to be suitable for a couple’s bedroom. If you’re are a single woman, then these ideas might be just what you are looking for. If you share your bedroom with your husband, however, there are many ways to make your bedroom romantic without making your man feel as if he’s stepped into a girlish boutique.
As with any idea, you can select only what you like and adapt any of the design ideas to fit your fancy (see below on how to compile inspiration to create the look you desire). As you begin the design process, keep these simple tips in mind:
Budget- Your financial budget is often the first consideration to any type of remodeling or redesign project. Consider how much money you have to spend and then think about the changes you want to make. There are inexpensive ways to create a design that won’t break your wallet. For example, check out the sale rack at your local stores (see list below). Think outside the box, decide what items can be refurbished by paint, fabric etc. Browse through your local thrift stores for items that can be made over. Check online for better deals on certain items, search websites such as EBay, Overstock or Amazon. If you’ve found items that you like in a local department store, watch for sale prices before you buy. Here are a few other stores to browse through on your search to a more romantic bedroom: Bed, Bath and Beyond, West Elm, The Company Store, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, your local Marshalls, your local TJ Maxx, JcPenney, Target, Ikea and your local Home Goods.
Design- When selecting the design that is right for you, use your imagination, personality and style to help lead the way. A great way to turn ideas into reality is by starting an inspiration board or folder. Cut out inspiration photos and note what draws you to each one. Then categorize the results and narrow down your selections. For example, make a list of each new item you need in your room (use this as the categories), draw inspiration from the photos, then break each one up into your category. This makes harvesting the design a lot easier.
Color Choices
When you consider romantic bedroom design ideas, you may automatically picture soft pinks, lace, and girly details. Unless you are designing the room for a young child or baby, however, erase these ideas from your head! There are so many other color options that say romance being so ladylike!
Neutral Colors~ if you’re not a fan of bright or dark colors, then why not choose a neutral color for your walls? To add more romance, consider faux finishes or select a wall decal or stencil for an embellished look. Because your walls are a neutral color, you’ll need to add more romance with the bedding, window treatments and accessories you choose. Rich reds, dark blues, gold’s, and chocolates in layers will spring life into the space. For a more dramatic look, try adding an extra accent color, or use subtle variations of the same color to create a relaxing space.
Deep Colors~ Choosing a jewel tone in shades of red, green, blue, or even eggplant adds instant drama to any room. You don’t want to go overboard, however, so be subtle by using lighter shades as accent colors. For example, in a neutral painted room, these colors would enhance the space in the form of window treatments, accent pillow and accessories.
Furniture
If new furniture is in your budget, then look for rich woods of walnut, cherry or mahogany. Sleigh beds can drastically transform a plain bedroom into a romantic getaway, especially if you choose lush and soft bedding and lots of beautiful pillows that allure a wonderful night’s sleep. Incorporate comfy armchair in a corner with a pretty lamp to read by.
Accessories
The accessories you decide on can really highlight the romantic theme abiding in the room. Think about incorporating low-lighting options to create the romantic ambiance (remember it is ok to have brighter lights for dressing, reading etc)… Lighting always sets the mood, whether in the bedroom, dining room or bedroom. If you really want to go all out replace that shabby ceiling light with a sparkly chandelier. Light up the evening with a bright grouping of candles, flickering candles always bring in a sense of romance. Adding bouquets of flowers or even a single bloom in a vase will help to create that soft and sweet feel (Flowers instantly radiate romance).
Incorporate other accessories like hidden reed diffusers, many plush accent pillows, flowers, a gorgeous area rug (this will work well even if you have a carpeted floor), and layered window treatments that allow you to let the sun in or create a dark haven for an afternoon nap.
