We have had tons of inquiries over the last year about style and how to determine the right style for the right person. Defining your style and nailing it down can be quite the challenge.
During my 4 {grueling} years @ Ringling {art school} while studying for my Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, I was learning so much about style, color, principles of design, graphic designs, logistics of construction & administration, architecture, interior solutions, space planning and the list goes on and on and on… {Believe me}. Who would have thought interior design was more than just color & picking out furniture & curtains, right? {Totally kidding… it is WAY more than that}. Those 4 years I couldn’t pick a thing for my own space without stressing because I couldn’t pick a style that was just my own… I was falling in love with Modern design, French country, Traditional, Mediterranean & on and on… I guess it is a good thing because from there I was successful at accomplishing & designing for a broad range of styles for various clients.
Being an interior designer and loving everything made it a little difficult to determine ‘my own’ style. Even after a few years of working in the industry and making selections for clients all day long, I still couldn’t make one concrete decision for myself… always second guessing myself. Until I finally realized it. I knew my style; I had just gotten frozen because I was felt like I had to marry myself to one thing, one definition of that style.
Wrong. Your personal design style is yours and it can marry and mesh with a broad range of styles, colors & designs. Next week, I am going to show you how I found mine and how I manage my style, married with the Mr.’s. But before I get way ahead here… I wanna know do you know your style? How did you find it? Do you get frozen in fear at the furniture store petrified you are going to make the wrong choice? How about paint colors, aren’t sure which one is truly “you”? DO TELL. I want to hear every bit… if you have found your style, how you found it or maybe how you are trying to find it… come on friends… dish the details.

I am slowly learning my style, but I get a bit nervous from time to time because I feel all over the board….

Sarah~ I am so happy you visit us frequently!! It can be overwhelming because catalogs and tradition teaches us to stick with one style and fill up a room based on it… I disagree because a lot of times layering modern with traditional and eclectic with coastal can lead to quite a dramatic interior…. stay tuned for the next week’s continuation!

I love a little of everything, so it’s really hard for me to pinpoint my style. And, the things I am passionate about change too. In our first house I was drawn to what I guess you would call old world or spanish colors-deep burgandies, oranges and yellows, then we went more neutral to beiges. Our last house was brand new and I didnt do anything to it, because I didnt want to mess it up, ha. Now we are downsizing and renovating, but lately, I am so drawn to the creamy whites and blues, which is great because I want our little place to feel like a beach retreat! Hope I can do it!! Love seeing all your ideas!
