Email Explanation… What’s best for me?

We get a lot of emails asking great interior design questions & describing real design dilemmas, we do our best to answer every single one! We though a few of you might be wondering about some of the frequently asked questions, so I thought we should showcase them in order to help more of our fabulous readers!

Question: There are so many options in decorating. How do I know what’s best for me?

Quick Answer: Choose colors, furniture and accessories wisely! Select only the things that you truly love, instead of decorating the way you “think” it should be done.

Try to defy the urge to just fill up your room. Take the time to plan your projects and accumulate pieces that you love. Browse through blogs like ours, magazines, online sites and interior design portfolios to gather inspiration.

Think of everything you buy as inviting a permanent guest into your home, because you will need to pay for it, make room for it, move it, dust it, clean it, and repair it – so it has to work for you and make you happy every time you see it.

Here are just a FEW of the online sites I have my clients go to for inspiration…

My Home Ideas

House Beautiful

Southern Living

HGTV

Houzz

If there isn’t room for an interior designer in your budget, you really need to first sit down and tag the thinks that you love from the inspiration images you gathered. Maybe even jot down notes. {Check out these posts about inspiration images.. here and here}…

Then take those notes and develop a plan of attack! Decide what elements are most important in your design and buy those first, remember accessories are easy things to pick up here and there, buy the larger items that make the most impact first! Also, keep in mind that everything doesn’t have to be really expensive, make sure you do buy durable everyday items such as sofas, beds, chairs and furniture you use on a daily basis. The smaller ticket items like accessories, wall décor and even rugs can be found at discount prices!

I always like to tell people that an amazingly designed room is truly never finished, that’s why there is no rush to just fill up a space just to say you are done! Take your time, enjoy the process and have fun! My house is ever changing and we like it that way!

Hope this helps! It was a fantastic question! Do you have design questions? Ask away… just email me @ Lindsay@adesignstory.com. Or if you need help with your space, check out “Our Shoppe” and pick out a design package that’s right for you! We have a sale… 40% off with the coupon code: summer.
